CAUGHT BY THE COUNSELOR
MEN OF THE WEST
BOOK 2 OF 3
Clay Montgomery was a strictly by-the-book-District Attorney when it came to putting away bad guys. He’d closed the book on his love life, however, before the first page could be written. He’d grown up watching his mother struggle to provide a hand-to-mouth existence for him and his siblings after his father walked away and that was enough to convince him that the happily-ever-after thing was a myth. He’d stick to what he was good at—his job. He certainly didn’t need a sassy female attorney to assist him with his high-profile case—and he wasn’t going to let her change his mind. About work or love.
Was he?
Assistant District Attorney Kayley Harris had been betrayed by the two men she’d loved most—her fiancé and her father. She’d given up on men. They couldn’t be trusted. For the last several years, she’d put her heart into her job and that was where it was going to stay. She certainly wasn’t about to risk it on a sexy D.A. who thought a long relationship was one that lasted more than a week. She was a lot smarter than that.
Wasn’t she?
“Would that be my reputation in the courtroom or the bedroom?” Clay turned toward her, leaning his shoulder against the wall. She could swear he’d stepped closer as well.
“Is it hot in here?” She said the first thing that popped into her head and instantly regretted it.
“It could be,” he grinned down at her.
“Stop that,” she almost growled at him.
“Stop what?”
“Flirting with me. You promised.”
She gasped as he did step closer. She clung to the rail, forgetting she could easily step away.
“Not exactly, counselor. I promised to keep it professional…while we were at work.”
“That’s not what you said.” She was finding it hard to concentrate with his lean face so close and his devilish brown eyes laughing down into hers.
“But it’s what was implied. What would be the point of being professional outside of a professional setting?” His hand rose and before she knew what was happening, he was cupping her face, turning it up and lowering his. “We’re off the clock now, Kayley.”
The first touch of his lips on hers delivered a soft sting as if their very breaths were electrified. He took his time, letting her adjust to the feel of his mouth on hers. Tender, lingering touches that grew more demanding as she followed his lead and kissed him back.
“Damn,” he groaned, shifting his stance so he could draw her against him. Without conscious thought, her arms rose, encircling his neck. She realized he was still taller than her, her three-inch heels not giving her any great advantage.
His arms closed around her, crushing her full breasts against his hard chest. Her nipples tingled at the contact, making her want more. He moved his hand, holding her head still as his lips claimed hers in a kiss that was undeniably filled with longing.
